5 tips on how to interpret tarot clarification cards

Not every tarot reader makes use of clarification cards. Some readers only use them once in a reading when a tarot card is not clear to them and other readers use them more often. The way people use clarification cards is different as well. In my opinion the reading is always about the card you have drawn first. A clarification card, to me, is a card that can explains this card even further. Because reading tarot is something personal it is always best to do it on your own way, in this post I just like to share the benefits of using clarification cards and to show you ONE way to use them. Like in an old German saying: many ways leads to Rome :).

So what are the benefits of using clarification cards? If you don’t use tarot spreads, clarification can be a great support. For example they can give you a more detailed picture of the reading. Also for daily 1 card readings, clarification cards will give you more a detailed story. They can tell about the emphasis about the reading. It is most of the time not necessary to use more then 2 clarifying cards for 1 card, but ofcourse it is possible. If you are a beginning tarot reader and you use more then 2 clarifying cards it is most of the time more confusing then without.

Why and how to interpret clarification cards

Tip 1: To target the subject of the tarot card more precise and to pair cards.

When you draw a second card next to the card you like to clarify, you can look at the differences and the similarities between the two cards. What is the common denominator of these 2 cards? Now you can take a look at the most obvious subject of these two cards.

Tip 2: To exclude subjects and give the reading a direction.

If you take a look at the two cards; which subject would you exclude? For example when you see the sun card upright and the 4 of wands card upright it is more likely that the subject is about comfortable feelings (from the querents perspective). There is a big chance the situation is about something that is making the querent happy. If instead of the 4 of wands you have drawn the moon card it can indicate someone with emtional big hights and big lows. This will make the sun card less positive for the querent and the reading can be about extremes and contrasts.

Tip 3: To indentify the motive behind a card.

If a card isn’t clear to you because of the motive of the card, you can use a clarifying card. This kind of clarification can give you insight on why a card showed up.

Tip 4: To indentify what is most important to know and which card has a stronger influence.

Together with the card that isn’t clear to you, the clarification card can strengten or weaken the other card. With this clarification card you can get also more insight in reversed tarot cards. You can find out if a reversed card is blocked or that it is only delayed.

Tip 5: To connect cards.

How: A clarifying card can be the missing piece (something you didn’t understand) to connect the meanings of the other tarot cards.

I really like that you talked about how clarification cards will give you more a detailed story for 1 card readings. My sister is really interested in the supernatural and the occult, and she’s really serious about learning to read tarot cards before the year ends. I’ll be sure to send a link of this article to her so she’ll know what she’ll need for the classes.
