Knight of Cups – The Movie – Review
Last year I went to a tiny movie theater somewhere in a small town in The Netherlands. This intimite theater (maybe as big as twice a living room) was exactly the right place to watch this movie. The knight of cups is a movie that descibes a period in a human life, where adults do not seem to talk about often. Or maybe a lot of adults do not experience a period like this (consciously). In this movie review I write from my personal perspective on how I felt intensely connected to this movie when I watch it last year.

Before the time I watched this movie I was withdrawing myself from the world around me for a while. Normally I am a pretty sober, talkative, happy and an outgoing person who likes a nice drink and a good party now and then. But now I had the chance to work on my own art projects for a few months. At the same time there was a spiritual or personal development going on that I never experienced before. The hermit tarot card describes pretty much my experience of that time. Or to be more precise: the hermit the high priestess and  the moon took me all at the same time to an isolated place were bitter sweet feelings created a different perspective on life. I would describe it as a strong connection with my inner self while being present in a pale world. The fakeness of what we call “reality” became painfully clear to me. How people sailed along with this stream of bullshit even seemed worse then rediculous to me. There was a thick glass wall in between me and the world we have accepted as “daily life experience”. I felt invisible but safe, like an observant of the world around me. Talking to people was irrelevant. They where in a different reality then I was. I could see their reality and I knew what it felt like, but they couldn’t see the reality that I CHOOSE to be in. I did not use words to describe my feelings to myself. It felt like something in between mourning and washing ashore after a long swim, half drowned but still alive. I knew this journey was important to do. After doing an intense research the last 10 years on healing, magic and art, maybe this was my final round of the chapter. After not talking much to people for weeks or even months (I can’t even remember) I felt understood by this movie. So from my perspective, this is why I do recommend watching this movie. Especially when you have experienced a similar period like Rick, the protagonist, which looks kind of similar to my own experience. And it could happen to you, as a dedicated tarot reader. Because reading tarot makes you conscious and aware of what you are doing and why you are doing it. Ofcourse, it depends on how you experience the world, but for me it felt like I finally had a real conversation with someone in that conscious period.

During the break of the movie a man asked me what I thought about the movie. He told me that he loved it, that he recognized it and that he experienced a spiritual journey like it when he was younger. It was beautiful to hear and see he seemed to understand it all completly, which made me really happy. I am very happy and grateful that this movie came to me at exactly the right time, synchronously, like a tarot card. “You are not alone”.

I look forward to your comments and if you have a similar spiritual experience like this.

Does this movie has anything to do with tarot cards:
Yes, the movie is divided in chapters. Every chapter has the name of a tarot card. The personalities and events in that chapter are related to that particular tarot card. A must see for every tarot reader. Personally I think some chapters (like the high priestess) could confuse beginning tarot readers about tarot card meanings. The movie is more about the knight of cups reversed. That is probably why they changed the poster another time into a tarot card with Rick on it in reversed position. As a tarot enthusiast you won’t regret watching this movie.

Why I think this movie is brilliant:
The experimental part makes this movie special, actual and unique. The main character Rick feels undefined and doesn’t understand the world around him. In the movie it looks like the director didn’t tell the actor Christian Bale what he should do in these scenes. This makes that you are more surprised as a viewer of the movie. It looks like Christian Bale really doesn’t know what is happing around him or what is going to happen in the movie. It is the first reality movie is have seen :-). In this subtile way it is absolutly fantastic!
The movie is very open and can be percieved in many ways, like tarot cards are open for interpretation. Great concept!

Why you might dislike this movie:
This movie isn’t for everyone. You need be openminded to the subject of tarot cards and maybe even recognize yourself in the movie in some way. This movie is great when you like alternative movies or when you read tarot cards.  If you like to watch an easy Hollywood movie, this is not for you. It might look like it in the first place but that is a fantastic illusion created by Terence Malick.
